Late in 2024 an amendment to the National Road Traffic Act finally defined where an e-bike stops being a bicycle and starts being a motor vehicle. How to choose an e-bike

Two things decide how good an e-bike feels: the motor and the battery. Mid-drive motors from Bosch, Shimano and Specialized sit at the cranks, balance the bike well and climb beautifully — they're worth the premium if you ride hills or trails. Cheaper hub motors (in the wheel) are fine for flat commutes but feel less natural. For range, look at the battery's watt-hours (Wh): 400–500 Wh covers most commutes, 600–750 Wh is what you want for long trail days. Then match the bike to the job — an urban e-bike for the commute, an e-MTB for the trails.
