The country's most famous one-day ride loops the Cape Peninsula clockwise from the Grand Parade in the city centre out to the DHL Stadium in Green Point. Its signature is the Chapman's Peak stretch — which the organisers call 'one of the world's most beautiful roads' — followed by the Suikerbossie climb, billed on the official site as 'a kilometre-and-a-half of purgatory.' 2. Amashova National Classic — KwaZulu-Natal (road)

Run point-to-point from Pietermaritzburg City Hall down to the Durban beachfront, the Amashova brands itself as South Africa's oldest road classic cycle race. The 106 km flagship (with 70 km and 40 km options) rewards riders who can hold a bunch on the fast, rolling drop to the coast, and a Business Relay format lets teams share the distance. 3. Trans Baviaans — Eastern Cape (MTB)

For sheer adventure nothing on the single-day list matches the Trans Baviaans: 230 km and 2,840 m of climbing straight across the Baviaanskloof, ridden non-stop in teams against a 24-hour cut-off through seven checkpoints. It starts high in Willowmore and finishes at the coast in Jeffreys Bay, and after 21 editions the organisers still call it 'the toughest, most rewarding mountain bike race in the country.' 1. Absa Cape Epic — Western Cape (MTB)

The Absa Cape Epic is the one every mountain biker knows: eight days, roughly 650 km and about 15,500 m of climbing across the Western Cape, ridden in compulsory two-person teams and sanctioned by the UCI. The organisers bill it as the 'world's toughest MTB stage race,' and even getting in is hard — entries are drawn from a waiting-list they call the 'Rite of Passage.' 2. KAP sani2c — KwaZulu-Natal (MTB)

If the Epic is the hardest, sani2c is the best-loved. Three days and around 270 km carry riders from a farm near the Sani Pass in the southern Drakensberg down to the Indian Ocean at Scottburgh, on some of the best-built singletrack in the country. 3. FNB Wines2Whales — Western Cape (MTB)

Wines2Whales packs roughly 200 km and 4,000 m of climbing into three singletrack-rich days through the Overberg, between Lourensford Wine Estate and Benguela Cove. It's so popular it runs as three separate weekend editions — Chardonnay, Pinotage and Shiraz — over the same route, and the organisers say the event generates more than R1 million a year for community beneficiaries.
