Gravel bike as a one-bike-quiver — realistic in SA?

I want one bike that can do my tar commute, weekend gravel, and the occasional bundu-bash. Is a modern gravel bike with 2 wheelsets the move, or am I kidding myself and should just get an XC hardtail?
