Cape Pioneer Trek 2026: 430km of Karoo Racing from Wilderness

For 2026, Cape Pioneer swaps its old inland starting point for a new venue on the Garden Route: the race now rolls out from the Wilderness Hotel in the coastal town of Wilderness, before turning inland to Herold for two stages, then on to Oudtshoorn for the final three days. It's the organiser's own framing of the event — 17 years of Cape Pioneer history, now in its third edition since the race was revived with a shorter format — and the route still does what it's always done: string together the Garden Route's forests, the Outeniqua foothills and the Klein Karoo's rock and thornveld into one continuous seven-day trip.

For riders based in the Cape or Garden Route, that new Wilderness start means an easier logistical run-in than previous inland starts — worth building into travel plans given the coastal N2 corridor gets busy over a September weekend.

The two 2,250m days — Stage 1 out of Wilderness and Stage 4's Queen Stage into the Swartberg — are the ones to respect. The organiser flags Stage 4's closing 8km as the defining climb of the week, gaining over 2,000 vertical metres in total on the day to a high point of roughly 2,000m above sea level, with weather on the mountain described as unpredictable even in fair conditions lower down.
