SA's great MTB migration heads for May 2027
Few South African races have the gravitational pull of the KAP sani2c. Every May, thousands of mountain bikers make the trip to the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands for a three-day run from the mountains to the ocean — and with the 2026 editions done, the organisers have already thrown the 2027 entry gates open. If previous years are anything to go by, the social Adventure edition in particular will not stay available for long — the organisers themselves note it sells out quickly.
The appeal is the journey. The race starts at Glencairn Farm near the southern Drakensberg, crosses the Midlands through dairy country, timber plantations and indigenous forest, drops into the Umkomaas Valley — the race's signature descent country — and runs out through nature reserves and sugar cane to finish at the Indian Ocean at Scottburgh. For KZN riders it is the home Grand Tour; for everyone else it is the reason to book a May trip to the coast.

OG or Adventure — which one is yours?
The two main editions ride the same 265km route with overnight stops at the Mackenzie Club and Jolivet Farm, but they draw different crowds. The OG is the original racing edition: UCI-sanctioned, with pro teams on the start line and a prologue race day before — the one to enter if you want a result that means something. E-bikes are welcomed in the OG, starting after the regular batches. The Adventure starts a day earlier and is the social edition — competitive riders who would rather not line up against pros, riding for the community and the trails. No e-bikes are allowed in the Adventure.
